Melbourne Cup Day

Tuesday, November 2 was Melbourne Cup day. Basically the entire country stops to watch a horse race. In the state of Victoria (where Melbourne is located) it is a public holiday. I have heard that a lot of people take the week off. Only in Australia does a three minute and twenty eight second horse race require a public holiday. In addition, it is customary for women to wear special hats that are called fascinators, a hybrid of a hat and head band. They take it very seriously. There is a huge market for these fascinators…

It’s a big event in Sydney as well. Even Kate’s office closed at noon so they could all celebrate and watch the race. Funnily enough the winner of the race was named Americain. Maybe it was a sign?
